In more optimistic news: I believe I’ll try my hand at reviewing once again.
As many of you know, I’ve always been a movie buff and an Anime fan in particular. And I’m also quite opinionated; I like having something to say on nearly any situation. It wasn’t until college that I put two and two together. My roommate, Ben, was an amateur filmmaker. His part-time job was reviewing movies for the school paper. He often took me with him to the theaters, and we’d discuss the film on the ride back and back at the apartment before he wrote his review. I never wrote any reviews professionally in this manner, but these conversations really got me interested. (So much so, in fact, that one of my main online hangouts is an Anime review website.)
The big joke ended up being my system. After one particularly bad film, my “review” was that it’d take me at least four beers before I’d be able to enjoy sitting down and watching that. Everyone chuckled at how concisely the big, scruffy Redneck put things into perspective. Since the line was so quotable, after the next film or two I was asked how many beers would it take for that film, and so on. Eventually I switched the scale, as it’s somewhat difficult to use a backwards system where a higher number means a worse movie, but I still keep the “beers” instead of the normal “stars” that most folks use. Not only is it somewhat of a trademark, but on a five-point scale it’s too easy to throw a rating of “three stars” at something. On a scale of one to six, you’re forced to pick either three or four for the mediocre films. I like that.
Anyways, it sounds like fun. (Besides that, it gives me something else to do, rather than sit here and let my life slip away...I need some things to fill my time and keep me pushing forward) I’ve seen a ton of Anime before, but I can’t in good faith review something that I’ve seen years ago. I’ll only review things that I’ve just finished watching recently, while it’s still very fresh on my mind. Not sure what I’ll do with these…perhaps once I register my own domain, I’ll post them all online in one place. (For the moment, I’ll borrow the format that THEM Anime uses. Just in case I feel like posting one of these to their forums under the “Reader Reviews” category.)
First on my list is Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, partly because it’s one of my all-time favorites and partly because it hurts to see it among the titles on the “Fifty Worst Anime of All Time” list alongside such travesties as MD Geist. I'll gradually chug along on that between MCSA cram sessions - might get them posted this weekend.
