February 10th, 2006 - Damage Control: Nash's Journal — LiveJournal
Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag it, drop it, zip-unzip it...
I know I've said this so many times in the past. Roughly once every 2-4 years. And I know that this time, I'll be labeled the biggest Right-wing Neo-Con Bush-loving asshole for saying it...

But it really burns me up when I see people protesting the Olympic Games.

Tonight on the evening news I don't think I heard about more than two athletes, but spent the rest of the half-hour watching people burn the Stars and Stripes, hang signs demanding that Laura Bush go home, or blocking the street so that the Olympic torch-runner couldn't proceed along his route. And these asshats were proud, proclaiming that they were powerful enough to stop the Olympic flame. (That last one I'm not even going to pretend to understand. Interfering with the Olympics themselves is entirely separate from protesting against America.) *seethes*

The whole damned point of the Olympics is for the entire world to stop being pissed off at one another long enough to have a little fair and friendly competition. It's not about any one country. And that's the beauty of it - the whole world (in theory) comes together to make the Games happen. Arabs and Jews, whites and blacks, Christians and Muslims and Hindu all are racing side by side, each giving it their all and the best man coming out on top. It's about fair play, mutual understanding, and respect. The only "borders" are the ones separating each of the lanes on the track or on the ice. It's only a shame that this is about as close as we'll ever get to true world peace.

Yet people are yelling and screaming and protesting against America...when the games aren't even being held in America. I believe that everyone is free to make their opinion known. Everyone is free to protest. But there's a time and a place for everything. Let the angry protesters wave signs in front of the Capitol building or along Main Street in whichever town they hail from. But at an event dedicated almost entirely to cooperation between nations....give it a rest, willya?
