Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag it, drop it, zip-unzip it...
This whole thing about Coretta Scott King's funeral is really rubbing me the wrong way.

I think it all boils down to respect. Several politicans attended the funeral of MLK's late wife to pay respect to her and the lives that she and her husband led. Several thousand civilians did so as well, to the point that only the first ten thousand were able to be seated.

The others yelled and shouted outside the church doors. People, this is a fucking FUNERAL. Please do not riot when you aren't allowed in. Especially when it's simply a matter of there not being enough chairs for everyone. First come, first served, now shut your traps. *headdesk*

Meanwhile, inside the church, Reverend Joseph Lowery stood in front of the mourners, making highly political cracks about how we never found WMD's in Iraq. And this is with the President himself sitting directly behind the fellow, partially in the camera shot at the time. Maybe it's just me, but even if you disagree with him you're supposed to show respect to the President. Nothing wrong with questioning his decisions or complaining about him on your own time, but at least some small amount of respect should still be shown toward the leader of your nation. Hell, you should have enough respect just for another human being not to mock him while he's less than five feet away...that's common curtesy.

More importantly, however, was the lack of respect shown to Mrs. King. This was supposed to be a gathering of people to celebrate her life and mourn her death. This was not a political debate. Politics, in theory, should never have entered the equation in the first place as the ceremony should have been about her, the person that she was and the life that she led. Of course, since she was involved in the civil rights movement there's no way that such an event could be entirely free of political banter. But this should be limited to discussion of the events from the civil rights movement of the 1960's - not current events like wiretaps or WMD's or what have you.

Another thing that irked me was the way people tried to make everything into a race issue. Of course, talking about racism is important and relevant considering the things that Mr. and Mrs. King did in their respective lifetimes. But things like Hurricane Katrina should have absolutely nothing to do with anything concerning her funeral service. Some of the speakers tried to turn it into a racial issue, talking about all the poor black folks that died or lost their homes during the storm. I hate to break it to you, but while humans may hold irrational hatreds towards one another...forces of nature pretty much kill whatever gets in their way. And - trust me on this one, for I speak from much experience - there are a lot of redneck bumpkins living in trailers in southern Mississippi.

Just for one day, these political assclowns should keep their mouthes shut and resume bickering once they get back to Washington. But that's just my opinion. You ain't got to agree with it, but you should at least repect it.
